In response to a letter from Ayatollah Jannati, the Secretary of the Guardian Council, which noted the upcoming expiration of the membership terms for Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Ahmad Khatami, Hujjat al-Islam Sheikh Alireza A'rafi, and Haj Sayyid Ahmad Hosseini Khorasani on July 16, the Leader wrote:
“I send my greetings and regards, and I hereby reappoint the aforementioned honorable gentlemen to serve again as Faqih members of the Guardian Council," According to a Tuesday statement from the Leader’s Public Relations Office.
The Constitutional Council, also known as Guardian Council, is a 12-member body tasked with vetting legislation and election candidates. According to Article 91 of the Constitution, six Islamic jurist members of the Council are appointed by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution. Article 110 also grants the Leader the authority to appoint and dismiss these jurists. The other six members of the Guardian Council, who are jurists, are selected by the Iranian Parliament from nominees introduced by the Head of the Judiciary.
